ARGANI

Aker El Fassi

A small clay pot of poppy and pomegranate, for a stain on the lips and the cheeks.

From the Amazigh to your skin

The ritual

The material

Colour, kept in clay.

Aker El Fassi is poppy petals and pomegranate rind, dried, ground and set onto the face of a small pot of unglazed clay. The name means the red of Fès. The pot is not packaging: the clay is porous, the pigment lives in its surface, and colour is lifted from it with a damp fingertip.

Dry, it is a small, wide saucer of pale clay on a short flared stem, its face a dark, satin red: the pot the souks of Fès still sell. Touched with water, it gives up a red that sits between brick and rose, sheer at first and deepening with each pass.

The forms

The pot, and the powder on request.

ARGANI offers Aker El Fassi in its traditional clay pot. The same pigment also comes loose, as a powder, for those who like to mix their own colour; we do not keep it, but we can source it for you.

The clay pot is what ARGANI offers. The loose powder is sourced on request.

How to use it

Wet the finger. Turn it once.

Everything depends on how damp the fingertip is. Barely damp gives a stain you can build; too wet, and it runs. Begin drier than seems right, and return for more.

Built in layers.

Lips and cheek with the translucent red flush of Aker El Fassi
01

A barely damp finger

Dampen a fingertip with water, or with ARGANI Rose Water or Orange Blossom Water for a softer finish.

02

Turn it on the pigment

Press and turn once against the pigment. A trace of colour is all you want.

03

Press it on, then build

Press into the centre of the lips and work outward. A second pass is better than too much at once.

For external use only. Patch test before the first full use. Avoid the eye area.

Provenance

Fès, and the word for its red.

Fès gave this its name, and ours still comes from the region of Fès-Meknès. Fès has been a centre of Moroccan craft for centuries, and the pigment in these pots is one of the things it is known for. Moroccan women have worn it on lips and cheeks for generations, and it has never needed reinventing.

Origin
Fès-Meknès

The ARGANI standard

The flush of Fès.

Poppy petals and pomegranate on clay, from the region of Fès-Meknès. Touched with a drop of water, it gives lips and cheeks a translucent, living colour that builds to exactly the depth you choose. A colour that looks grown rather than made.

The khatem

Press and hold.

The eight-pointed star of Moroccan zellige is the mark on every ARGANI piece. Hold it closed, and it gives up where this one began.
