ARGANI

Black Soap

Beldi soap made with pure olive oil, to soften the skin before the scrub.

From the Amazigh to your skin

The ritual

The material

Closer to a balm than a bar.

Beldi is a soft soap, and ours is made with pure olive oil. It comes as a dense, glossy gel, dark in the mass and amber where the light passes through it, and it barely lathers. That is by design.

It is not made to strip the skin. It rests on the surface and softens it, so that the scrub which follows can do its work. In the hammam, it always comes first.

How to use it

Steam. Soap. Wait. Scrub.

Black soap asks for two things: warmth and time. Hurried in a cold room, it does little. Given steam and ten minutes, it changes how the skin feels.

As the hammam uses it.

01

Warm the room, warm the skin

A hot shower or a steam room first. The skin should be warm and wet before the soap touches it.

02

A thin layer, everywhere

Spread a thin layer over the body. A little covers a great deal.

03

Five to ten minutes

Rest in the steam while it works. The waiting is the step most often skipped, and the one that matters most.

04

Rinse, then scrub

Rinse, then work over the skin with the kherqa, the hammam glove. What the soap has softened now lifts away with ease.

05

Oil while damp

After the scrub, the skin is at its barest. Press in ARGANI Argan Oil while it is still damp.

For external use only. Avoid the eye area. Patch test before the first full use.

Provenance

Marrakech-Safi, and its hammams.

Beldi means of the country: the local, the traditional, the made at home. It is the soap Moroccan households have long made from their own olives, and the hammam built its whole sequence around it. Ours comes from the region of Marrakech-Safi.

Marrakech-Safi

The ARGANI standard

The first gesture of the hammam.

Beldi soap made with pure olive oil in Marrakech-Safi: dense, glossy, amber against the light. Laid on warm skin and given five minutes of steam, it softens everything the week has left behind, so the kherqa lifts it away and the skin beneath is smooth, clean and ready for oil.

The khatem

Press and hold.

The eight-pointed star of Moroccan zellige is the mark on every ARGANI piece. Hold it closed, and it gives up where this one began.
