ARGANI

Saharan Kohl

Saharan kohl, ground from galena, the mineral that gives it its black.

From the Amazigh to your skin

What it is

The material

A mineral, ground fine.

Saharan kohl is made by grinding kohl stone. The stone is galena, a lead-bearing mineral, and it is what gives traditional kohl its particular dense black and its weight. Some preparations add charcoal and botanical material such as olive and date pits, cloves or pepper, but in Moroccan and Saharan kohl the mineral is the principal pigment.

Galena is the soul of Saharan kohl: the mineral behind its dense, velvet black and its weight in the hand. Across North Africa and the Sahara it has been ground this way for centuries, and ARGANI offers it under its true name.

Provenance

The desert kept it exactly as it was.

Kohl is among the oldest cosmetics still in use. It runs from ancient Egypt across North Africa and deep into the Sahara. Elsewhere it has long since been reformulated; in the Sahara it stayed mineral, and it stayed in the same small containers.
